HOW TO OFFER WATER TO SUN
Sun is the king of the planets, karaka of soul. One of the biggest traditions of our ancestors has been to worship the sun. Sandhya vandan remained a significant part of our ancestors life where they worshipped the setting sun with mantras.
More than that “offering water to sun” still remains a part of daily life of many Indians. With the modern times, both these practices seem to have faded.
When I ask people to offer water to Sun, often the question is “How?”.
I am creating this article to help them take up an easy practice, remove the fluff and give the most authentic and powerful way of doing this ritual and benefiting the most from it.
While this is based on prescribed traditions, I am going take inspiration and guidance from my Guru Prash Trivedi’s book “Sun-The Cosmic Powerhouse”. As always, credit goes to him not to me. Because he finally cut through the fluff and gave us the simple and pure procedure.
Mantra: The Gayatri Mantra.
Sun is associated with Goddess Gayatri. Thus chanting Gayatri Mantra 9 times while facing the Sun is the right way to do this.
Always start any Mantra Sadhana with invocation of Lord Ganesha. So start with “Om Shree Ganeshaye Namah” at least once.
Then Chant Gayatrai Mantra 9 times, while facing the Sun.
Sanskrit:
ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः ।
तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं ।
भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि ।
धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥
English:
Om Bhūr Bhuvaḥ Svaḥ
Tat Savitur Vareṇyaṁ
Bhargo Devasya Dhīmahi
Dhiyo Yo Naḥ Prachodayāt
One can do this while looking at the Sun at the times of Sun Rise or Sun Set.
In case you are worshipping the setting Sun, just doing Gayatri mantra and bowing to the setting Sun will do.
WATER CANNOT BE OFFERED DURING SUNSET.
IT CAN ONLY BE OFFERED DURING SUN RISE.
How to offer water:
One shouldn’t look at the Sun directly. Look at the rays of sun through water being poured from a COPPER vessel. If possible, let the rays of the Sun travelling through the water fall on your third eye in the middle of your forehead.
Also there is no need to add anything to the water. Some people add rice, jaggery, etc. it is ok if that has been your family tradition, but it is not necessary. Just pure water is good enough.
Sun Mantra: “Om Suryaye Namah” this mantra can be chanted 108 times after this.
If you can’t do it daily, try doing it at least on Sunday.
Hope this was helpful.
God bless,
G. Vijay Kumar
